Repair Program
Background - Gerling Laboratories is mostly about
John Gerling, a retired electrical engineer. Making a long story short,
one of John's hobby is using a mini-mill and lathe. The controller for his
mill failed and a replacement was not immediately available. John took it
as a personal challenge to repair his, did so and in doing so learned a great
deal about SIEG controllers. One thing led to another and with the help and
encouragement of several in the field and the unfortunate demise of Uncle Rabid,
a major repairer, he decided to turn his knowledge and
capability into a business.
Facility
- The facility consists of two stations. The picture at the left is of the
test console custom designed and built specifically for the SIEG line of controllers. It is
used to locate the problems in defective units, test the repaired controller and
make the on-board adjustments. The second is a repair station using state-of-the-art equipment
from Aoyue to remove and replace
through-hole and surface mounted components as required.
Program - A returned controller will fall
into one of these categories: (note that the following applies to
any controller listed on the Home page)
-
(1) It is defective and cannot repaired. An email report will be made
to the owner. It will returned for a charge of $8.00 for shipping
costs ($10 if it includes a control box) or scrapped with the owners permission with no charge.
(see
?Repairable? page for discussion)
(2) It has defective components. These components will be replaced, the on-board settings
will be made and it will be tested and returned with a test report for a charge of $50.00
plus the return cost.
There are no extra charges for the components replaced. If an upgrade
is available for that model, it will be installed for no extra charge.
All returned items, foreign and domestic, will be shipped via USPS Priority
mail with a tracking number. An email with the tracking number will be
sent on the day it is shipped.
Test Report and Reinstallation Instructions: Each board
returned after being repaired will come with a final test report and reinstallation instructions. These instructions give
diagnostic tests to each part of the control unit to make sure any problems that
might exist are resolved. In addition, a properly rated fuse will be
included. We have found that over fusing is a serious problem which can
cause traces on the PC board to be damaged.
Sample test and reinstallation instructions can be seen

The above charges are for US customers. I accept controllers to be
repaired from other countries. The charge is $50.00 plus the cost to return the
item
Warranty - The warranty given to a repaired unit
is limited as follows:
I give a repaired controller a rigorous final test including 30 minutes of
continuous operation at full power and have a firm belief that it will perform
properly in a trouble free environment. I provide test instructions to
help find fault conditions in the operating installation. I have no
control over the operating conditions and cannot give an operating time warranty
after reinstallation. Should there be a problem after reinstallation, I
will do everything possible to help solve it including a one time retest and
repair (if possible). In such a case, the customer is responsible for two
way shipping and direct cost of any repair parts that might be required.
A successful rerepair is not guaranteed.
